AI Citation Sources in 2026: What ChatGPT and Perplexity Cite Most

AI Citation Sources in 2026: What ChatGPT and Perplexity Cite Most

By Stas Levitan, CEO · · 6 min read

The short answer: In our 12-month comparison, product and service pages on company websites became the largest group of sources that ChatGPT and Perplexity cite: 41% and 45% of citations. Listicles and comparison articles held steady at 29% on ChatGPT. Wikipedia and Reddit fell sharply on ChatGPT, and review sites moved in opposite directions on the two engines.

We ran the same kind of buyer questions through ChatGPT and Perplexity in two windows, Oct 2025 to Mar 2026 and Jul to Nov 2026, and counted every link the answers cited as a source. That is about 207,100 cited links in the first window and 240,300 in the second.

Where AI tools point their answers should shape your content budget and site structure: which pages to build, whether review sites are worth paying for, and whether Reddit is worth the effort. The results below are engine-specific, so we report ChatGPT and Perplexity separately.

Changes are relative changes in each group's share of citations between the two windows, measured separately for each tool. Current share is the second window, where we have it.

What sources does ChatGPT cite most?

ChatGPT now cites product and service pages most: 41% of its citations in the second window, up 51%. Listicles and comparison articles are second at 29%, roughly the same as a year earlier.

Help centres, support pages and developer docs grew fastest on ChatGPT, up 121%. Official regulators and government agencies stayed under 1% of ChatGPT citations.

The groups that lost share on ChatGPT were Wikipedia (−57%), company blog posts (−29%), news and trade press such as Forbes, TechRadar, Search Engine Land and NerdWallet (−28%), and video and social platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and X (down slightly).

What sources does Perplexity cite most?

Perplexity also cites product and service pages most: 45% of its citations, up 23%. Help centres and docs grew 160%.

Perplexity moved differently from ChatGPT in three places. Regulators and government agencies (FTC, FDA, EPA, national and state government) rose from 0.5% to 5.1%. Listicles fell 43% to 13%. Review sites rose 19%.

Company blog posts fell 46% on Perplexity, and news and trade press fell 21%.

Does ChatGPT still cite Reddit?

Much less than before. Reddit and Quora together fell 69% as a share of ChatGPT citations. The decline started in February 2026, months before it became a common discussion topic this summer.

Perplexity went the other way: Reddit and Quora went from almost nothing to 2.6% of its citations. Reddit is not gone from AI answers. How much it matters depends on the engine.

Are listicles still important for AI visibility?

On ChatGPT, yes. "Best X", "top 10", "X vs Y" and "alternatives to X" articles on outside sites held at 29% of ChatGPT citations, more than one in four, and remain its second-largest source group.

On Perplexity they fell 43% to 13%. Listicles are still the strongest third-party placement in this data, but the case for them rests mostly on ChatGPT.

Do review sites still matter for AI citations?

It depends on the engine. Review and rating sites (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, BBB, Clutch, Yelp, Glassdoor and similar) fell 28% on ChatGPT and rose 19% on Perplexity.

Inside the group, Clutch, Software Advice and GetApp gained share, while G2, Capterra and Product Hunt fell sharply. G2 is still the most cited single source for B2B software questions.

What we would act on

  1. Make the page that describes what you sell quotable. Product and service pages alone are 41% of ChatGPT citations and 45% of Perplexity citations in this sample. Add help centres and docs, which grew fastest on both engines, and pages that companies own make up the largest share of what these tools cite. The question shifts from "how do we get mentioned?" to "is our product page written so an AI tool can quote it?"
  2. Keep chasing listicles, mainly for ChatGPT. They hold at more than one in four ChatGPT citations. That is the outside placement still worth pursuing. See how to get cited by ChatGPT for how to approach it.
  3. Do not build a plan on Reddit alone. It fell sharply on ChatGPT and is small but growing on Perplexity. Treat it as one channel among several.
  4. Check review sites by engine and by platform. Paying for a review profile helps on Perplexity more than on ChatGPT in this data, and the platforms inside the group moved in different directions.

Methodology

  • Engines: ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  • Windows: Oct 2025 to Mar 2026, then Jul to Nov 2026.
  • Questions: the same kind of buyer questions in both windows. Questions that name a brand were excluded.
  • What we counted: every link an AI answer cited as a source, about 207,100 links in the first window and 240,300 in the second. Only links the AI actually cited.
  • Own-domain exclusion: links to the tracked company's own website were removed, so a company's own pages cannot inflate the results.
  • Classification: each remaining link was grouped by domain plus URL path, for example /pricing as a pricing page and /blog as a blog post.
  • Comparison: each group's share of citations was compared between windows separately for each tool, so a change in the mix of tools cannot distort the result.

What this does not measure. These are shares of cited links, not traffic, clicks, rankings or sales. A change in share shows where answers pointed, not why. We do not claim any single change caused another, and we report current shares only where the dataset includes them.
